Job Purpose: The Cook is responsible for the preparation of nutritious and appetizing meals for Sister Residents and guests according to menu and dietary requirements. This includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Mercy Center Burlingame events and retreats guests. The role ensures a clean, safe, and neat environment, following kitchen safety guidelines and sanitary regulations. The Cook also supports catering events and special functions as needed, incorporating an understanding of the Mercy mission and values into work performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety/Maintenance:
- Ensures that safety regulations and precautions are followed at all times by all personnel.
- Follows established Infection Control and Universal Precautions procedures when performing daily tasks.
- Cleans workstation after each task.
- Ensures that the department is maintained in a clean and safe manner by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained.
- Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment immediately to the Food Services Manager.
- Reports all accidents/incidents as established by organizational policy. Fills out appropriate reports as needed.
Service and Community:
- Responsible for the preparation of breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Sister Residents.
- Prepares food for Mercy Center Burlingame events and retreats guests.
- May prepare/serve food for catering events and special functions as needed.
- Prepares meals using planned menus, recipes, and appropriate quantities.
- Monitors quality control for all menu items prior to service: temperature, taste, appearance, and texture.
- Prepares all necessary work for the next day's menu.
- Assists with inventory and cleaning of all walk-ins.
- Assists in inventorying and storing incoming food and supply orders.
- Washes pots, pans, dishes, etc., and returns them to the proper storage area as needed.
Mission-Driven Service:
- Reviews all information posted on the board regarding campus-wide events (special diet, last-minute changes, etc.).
- Coordinates “in advance” with the manager and other co-workers to ensure each event, retreat, meal service, etc., is organized and runs smoothly.
- Demonstrates respectful treatment of the dignity, privacy, and individuality of Sister Residents, guests, and co-workers.
- Makes recommendations to the Food Service Manager regarding the equipment and supply needs of the department.
- Participates in and completes all assigned training in a timely manner.
- Attends department staff meetings.
Qualifications:
Education, Competencies, and Experience
Required:
- Two (2) years of cooking experience in a non-fast-food setting, such as a restaurant, assisted living, or healthcare facility, preparing full-course meals using recipes.
- Valid CA Food Handler’s Card.
- Available to work a full-time, variable schedule (6 am - 2 pm or 11 am - 7 pm) that may include evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Strong communication skills with sufficient fluency in the English language to effectively understand and be understood by others.
- Demonstrated knowledge of food services procedures.
- General knowledge of the practices and methods used in the preparation of food and the ability to cook a variety of foods in large quantities.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English.
- Ability to operate the equipment associated with food service preparation.
- Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant it.
- Ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Ability to deal tactfully with other co-workers, residents, guests, and the general public.
- Ability to create attractive and appealing food presentations.
- Must be free from illegal drug use and from the use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
Preferred:
- High School Diploma or GED Preferred.
- Prior experience in a healthcare or religious organization
- Understanding and appreciation of the traditions and culture of the Sisters of Mercy and the Catholic Church.
