Position Overview
Erie and Niagara Insurance Association is seeking a full-time Commercial Lines Underwriting Specialist for their office in Williamsville, NY. The Commercial Lines Underwriting Specialist provides leadership, support and guidance to the underwriting team. Maintains a high level of working knowledge of the commercial line of business and is responsible for providing product support.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Keeps abreast of trends and changes in the marketplace. Assists in implementing changes to product offerings and pricing of programs as needed
- Selects, trains, and develops staff. Responsible for year-end reviews, including salary adjustment recommendations; initiates necessary corrective action as needed
- Assists in establishing underwriting guidelines, including authority levels
- Participates in account/policy workflow assignments as needed to maintain acceptable inventory standards
- Builds a rapport with agency personnel offering friendly, courteous, and professional customer service
- Responsible for placement of reinsurance within assigned authority level
- Reviews and approves higher value and more complex risks, following the underwriting authority level
- Reviews, processes, approves or refers policy cancellation or reinstatement requests within assigned authority level
- Reviews and approves PML calculations and mapping for placement within assigned authority level
- Approves conditional and formal notices within assigned authority level
- Approves or refers policy renewals based on assigned authority level
- Addresses phone call inquiries and written communication from insureds and initiates necessary action
- Approves backdated endorsements within assigned authority level
- Assists and/or conducts onsite/offsite/overnight agency product training sessions, as well as work related seminars/conferences
- Assists Director of Underwriting in the design and implementation of projects and special assignments in order to further departmental goals and initiatives
- Plays an integral role in development, testing, compiling results and implementation of department rating and Form updates
- Executes underwriting quality control monitoring for adherence to the assigned underwriting authority level
- Monitors open inventory and recommend appropriate action when needed
- Assists in insurance department correspondence
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Director of Underwriting
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree is preferred
- Ten years of related underwriting experience is required
- INS designation, or other equivalent industry designation is required
- CPCU or CIC Designation is strongly recommended
- Ability to use initiative and sound judgment to make decisions within established guidelines
- Demonstrates broad knowledge of coverage for select lines of business written by the department
- Demonstrates knowledge of insurance industry terminology and laws as it pertains to assigned area
- Proficient computer skills in a windows based environment
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form
- Ability to assist and direct staff
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $85,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
