ABOUT LOYOLA MEDICINE AND SAINT JOSEPH
The Vice President, Clinical Excellence will have oversight for Loyola Medicine as well as Saint Joseph Health System. Loyola Medicine, based in Chicago, IL consists of 3 hospitals (Loyola University Medical Center 547 beds, McNeal Hospital 374 beds, and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital 247 beds). Loyola Medicine employees over 9000 employees, with an annual revenue of approximately $1.9B. Saint Joseph Health System is located in Mishawaka, IN and consists of 2 hospitals (Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center 254 beds and Plymouth Medical Center 58 beds). Saint Joseph employees over 2300 employees, with an annual revenue of approximately $400M.
The position will be based out of Chicago at Loyola Medicine. Relocation assistance is provided. Travel is required to manage both Illinois and Indiana hospitals.

POSITION PURPOSE
The VP of Clinical Excellence position provides leadership for quality, patient safety, risk management, infection prevention, regulatory compliance, patient experience and relations at all hospitals and clinics within the Illinois/Indiana region of Trinity Health. The VP is responsible for leading the regional efforts to deliver world-class health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient centered. The VP also ensures that the region meets accreditation and regulatory standards and fulfills federal and state reporting requirements. In collaboration with senior management and clinical leadership, the VP will lead the development of short and long-term strategic and tactical plans, setting of priorities, allocation of resources, and development of relevant policies and procedures. The VP will also implement ongoing evaluation mechanisms to assess progress of the quality and patient safety plan. A major focus will be a comprehensive strategic plan to optimize and achieve pay-for-performance metrics. The VP is expected to lead the partnership between the Clinical Excellence teams and key stakeholder teams, such as: nursing, clinical, and administrative departments, medical staff organization, and committees throughout the region.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Leads the development, implementation, assessment and continuous improvement of a comprehensive, region-wide quality improvement program that is aligned with the strategic priorities of the region and selected sites of care. Integrates traditional efforts to improve quality with Lean-Sigma to create a premier, data-driven quality improvement program that includes all departments, divisions, programs and all sites of care supports and where necessary, oversees the redesign of patient care services by multi-disciplinary teams that aim to improve quality, safety and/or service. Identifies teams that aim to improve quality, safety and/or service. Actively communicates quality improvement activities and knowledge throughout the region as well as to regional and national audiences. Maintains currency with state of the art in quality improvement and patient safety in health care and other industries. Facilitates creation of new knowledge for use by policy makers and clinicians by participating, where possible, in professionally credible research and by presenting results in appropriate local, regional and national forums. Monitors performance against national benchmarks as defined by national quality programs including, but not limited to, Leapfrog, CMS Star rating, commercial payor performance metrics, and U.S. News and World Report
PATIENT SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT: Leads the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of a patient safety program that aligns with both the regional and selected sites of care strategic plans. Facilitates and monitors progress on action plan implementation of root cause analysis. Formulates short- and long-term priorities and goals for improving patient safety. Develops and implements a plan to continuously measure and improve a culture of safety and high reliability. Facilitates the implementation and communication of tools, systems, and policy changes to improve the safety of care. Leads integration of the patient safety program into all patient care operations including leadership rounds. Identifies, develops, reviews, and disseminates performance on measures of patient safety throughout the region. Provides guidance and actively participates on safety committees throughout the system. Maintains knowledge and expertise in the field of quality management and patient safety that includes regulatory changes, evaluation techniques, and research. Promotes and participates in research activities as appropriate.
REGULATORY COMPLIANCE, ACCREDITATION, AND POLICY: Leads efforts to maintain continuous readiness with all regulatory and accreditation requirements from agencies including CMS, TJC, and state/city/county public health departments. Oversees monitoring of accreditation and regulatory performance and provides results to Senior Management and Clinical Leadership, making recommendations for appropriate corrective actions. Oversees communication plans and documentation to support regulatory compliance priorities and initiative. Keeps personally informed of changes to regulatory and accreditation requirements to ensure organizational compliance.
QUALITY MEASUREMENT: Oversees the collection, analysis, and reporting of data that leads to an information rich environment. This will support continuous measurement and improvement of clinical quality and patient safety. Implements systems to ensure ready access, understanding, education and use of data required to support a continuous learning and improvement environment. Ensures that accreditation and regulatory data reporting is completed in a timely, accurate and appropriate manner that meets the needs of all relevant agencies, e.g. CMS, JC, State/city/county Department of Public Health. Oversees assessment and reporting of key clinical processes and outcomes and applies appropriate analytical and statistical methodology to ensure that reports are accurate, valid and useful. Provides leadership and direction to develop appropriate dashboards and analytical reports for users throughout the region including administrative and clinical leaders, departments, service lines, units, programs and multidisciplinary Quality and Patient Safety initiatives. Oversees development of a program to educate leaders, physicians and staff regarding the appropriate use and interpretation of modern quality improvement data.
ORGANIZING RESOURCES: Develops and implements an organizational structure that will achieve necessary outcomes throughout the region. This includes recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and holding accountable colleagues that fall within scope and span of leadership. Develops and implements policies and management/operational structures to ensure continuous quality care, patient access, customer service excellence and enhanced profitability.
PLANNING: Guides strategic planning activities and the development of hospital/regional goals. With the department chairs and executive leadership, identifies and develops strategic and tactical plans for specific areas of responsibility and the overall organization. This includes analysis of environmental issues, quality and financial data to collaboratively develop systematic plans for achievement of goals. Adapts goals and plans to respond to the environment and successfully meet challenging, but achievable goals.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Develops budgets to ensure appropriate allocation of resources to support operation of hospital programs and meet organizational goals. Participates in decision-making for the departmental budget.
TEAM BUILDING: Fosters positive team collaboration and staff development across the region to facilitate effective and efficient operations, employee engagement and achievement of quality, safety and customer service excellence goals. Oversees human resource functions including recruitment, training. mentoring and continuous performance management to maintain the highest quality workforce. Establishes and maintains effective relations with administrators and staff throughout the organization and provides proactive support and active involvement in decision-making.
COMMUNICATION: Provides communication to administration, faculty, management and staff to establish understanding of the organization mission and strategic goals necessary to achieve organizational goals.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Actively engages in professional development to maintain current skills and knowledge of environment trends, clinical developments and business opportunities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree in healthcare administration or clinical area; MBS, MHA, MPH, MSN or related required.
At least eight or more (8+) years in patient quality and safety with progressively increasing responsibility and a minimum of five (5) years of healthcare leadership experience, preferably in a large, complex integrated health care system.
Demonstrated experience as a senior leader in aligning patient quality and safety programs with organizational strategies, which include optimizing the value of care provided. Deep knowledge and demonstrated experience implementing innovative approaches to connecting broad quality programs to organizational growth and financial strategies. Exceptional leadership, management and facilitation skills. Demonstrated ability to skillfully counsel, collaborate and negotiate; inspire and build confidence in others; create alliances; obtain support and respect from diverse groups and foster an understanding and commitment to the ministry. Ability to adapt style and approach to match the needs of varying teams, individuals and situations. Extensive knowledge and experience leading and managing complex organizational change and performance improvement.
Excellent analytical, tactical, execution and organizational abilities required to conceptualize well in unstructured, fast-paced, dynamic and multi-functional environments. Ability to think strategically, analytically and tactically.
