Job Description
Provides patient care and assists the medical provider(s) in medical care. Responsibilities include rooming, pre-op, intra-op, and post-operative care [triaging, discharging] and follow up care as directed. Also includes safely assisting procedures, ensuring timely flow in the practice, and triaging patient calls and issues. Serves as a reference for clinical staff for questions related to medications. Always promotes teamwork with provider(s), as well as, all team members.
- Assess, instruct and prepare patients prior to procedure
- Ensure that operative and informed consents are signed and correct
- Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for procedure
- Initiate IVs and ensure patients are informed about procedure
- Assess patient’s post-operative condition
- Monitor vital signs and other measurements of progress, meeting discharge criteria
- Complete patient charting in an accurate, concise, and timely manner
- Answer patient questions and ensure patient comfort
- Monitor patients for condition changes, reporting any changes to physician
- Perform intervention duties during post operative emergencies
- Possess competency in acute patient care
- Ability to gather pertinent medical history and provide concise instruction for pre operative and post operative care
- Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching, standing and walking 6 or more hours per day
- Requires lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling while transporting or transferring patient safely
- Visual acuity to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration and infection
- Appropriate telephone and patient triage skills
- Respond to telephone inquiries regarding expressed needs of the caller
- Perform outbound follow-up calls as requested
- Refer caller to appropriate resources/staff
- Alert anesthesia of results of labs, physical assessment, or special needs of individual with medical problems
- Answer inquiries in a timely and helpful manner
- Demonstrate knowledge of the practice’s policies and protocols
- Demonstrate flexibility in performance of patient care tasks to achieve timely, responsive and high quality of care
- Demonstrates flexibility in performance to achieve the practice’s goals
- Respect the confidentiality of the patient
- Document and report incidents according to protocol
- Maintain a safe environment
- Attend staff meetings, educational and safety programs
- Demonstrate the ability to respond appropriately in an emergency situation
- Demonstrate organizational skills to facilitate a smooth flow of the workload
- Practice flexibility in scheduling to provide staff coverage
- Assume all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by practice
- Responsible for maintaining accurate narcotic count and supportive documentation.
- Responsible for checking and maintaining emergency crash cart and supplies
- Responsible for organizing prescription refills, prior authorizations for medications and notifying patient of status.
- Assist with accurate documenting of prescription forms, ensuring scanning and linking to correct patient(s) EMR chart
- Responsible to contact each patient having a procedure the day prior to schedule procedure to answer any questions, provide instructions and confirm appointment
- Is knowledgeable of location, care and all operations of medical equipment. Keeps workspace stocked with appropriate supplies.
- Responsible by contacting each patient by phone within three (3) days of patient's procedure to assess patient's progress and properly document any findings
