Job description: Development Associate, Windham County Humane Society
The Windham County Humane Society (WCHS), located on Route 30 in Brattleboro, Vermont, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of animals as well as enhancing the relationship between individuals and pets through adoption, education, advocacy, basic veterinary care, compassion, and promotion of animal welfare.
Title: Development Associate
Position Summary
The Development Associate along works with the Executive Director to execute WCHS’s development & fundraising activities. He/she/they must enjoy working within an environment that is mission- driven, results-driven, and community oriented.
The ideal individual will possess strong written and verbal communication, creative design and organizational skills.
Duties, Responsibilities and Authority
In accordance with organizational policies, duties include but are not limited to:
Development & Fundraising
Database(s) Administration
- Navigate the donor and marketing databases including donor gift entry, record maintenance, creating dedicated donation forms, and general donor acknowledgement.
- Generate & segment donor acknowledgement letters for emailing/mailing/calling.
- Set up campaign, appeal, and batch codes to track where money is coming into the organization.
Donor Communications
- Draft copy for development functions including appeals, acknowledgement letters, social media, events, sponsorship, etc.
- Proofread, and edit donor appeals, thank you letters, and other correspondence/documents.
- Coordinate, edit, build, and distribute outbound email campaigns using Constant Contact to support WCHS’ programs and initiatives.
Digital Communications
- Design marketing graphics.
- Ensure WCHS website content and online postings are accurate and up to date.
- Support the execution of sponsored content placements across our web properties.
- Execute on the social media plan and oversee WCHS’ presence on all social media platforms (Including Facebook,
- Coordinate, edit, build, and distribute outbound email campaigns to support WCHS’ programs and initiatives, including newsletters, program alerts, automated/triggered messages, and event promotions.
Event Planning
- Create and manage online or digital events/fundraisers.
- Assist in planning in-person events including venue selection, coming up with the strategy for success, securing sponsors and in-kind items/goods, working with volunteers, setting up and working the event.
General Operations
- Assist with office organization that can include, but is not limited to IT, phones, filing, etc.
- Provide support and assistance to volunteers.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
- College degree preferred
- 3+ years’ related experience
- Knowledgeable of fundraising best practices
- Strong working knowledge of Google Suite, and digital communications, social media, and web platforms
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures and safety standards
- Consistently report to work on time and prepared
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, interpret application/software and user manuals/instructions, financial and data reports. Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, donors, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to supporters, public groups, and leadership.
Computer Skills
- Ability to understand and use Microsoft Word, Excel, QuickBooks, GMAIL, Facebook, and other social medial and internet database software.
- Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
- Valid driver’s license and legal USA residency documentation required.
- Work Environment
- Work is primarily in office environment with exposure to animal allergens, high noises levels and zoonotic diseases.
- Some work occurs outside the office environment at meetings and events. Potential interactions with destressed, angry, or emotional people.
Physical Requirements
- The work requires long periods of sitting or standing at a desk while using a computer, calculator, or other office equipment.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk; use hands to fingers, handle or feel; talk and hear; reach with hands and arms. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. with or without assistant.
- Must be able to type written communications, enter and retrieve data via computer keyboard and monitor. Must be able to communicate verbally and aurally via telephone and in person and in written materials. Requires considerable walking, standing, and moving.
- Varying shifts, weekdays and weekends, and some holiday work may be required.
- Overtime work as necessary.
Status: Full time, hourly/nonexempt at 38 hours/week. $19 to $21/hour depending on experience.
