Senior Science Writer/Editor to support our contract with the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, National Institute of Justice. The
Senior Science Writer/Editor will use their scientific background and writing/editing skills to translate complex scientific materials into plain language, understand sophisticated scientific methods and their application to law enforcement, and write about the implications for law enforcement professionals and policymakers.
Clearance:
- Must be able to obtain Public Trust clearance post-hire.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- Translate complex scientific materials into plain language.
- Understand and convey sophisticated scientific methods and their application to law enforcement issues.
- Write about the implications of scientific findings for law enforcement professionals and policymakers.
- Simplify peer-reviewed scientific findings for executive leaders without science backgrounds.
- Collaborate closely with NIJ subject matter experts, including federal and contract staff.
- Attend staff meetings, agency workshops, and other presentations (virtually or in person).
- Interview subject matter experts, working closely with them to draft, review, and revise content.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, science (forensics, life, physical, social, or behavioral sciences), or closely related field.
- Five years of directly relevant work experience writing and editing publications of a technical or scientific nature.
- Excellent writing skills required and knowledge of style guidelines.
- Ability to translate complex materials into plain language.
- Experience in describing scientific findings for non-scientific audiences.
- Excellent collaboration, interviewing, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of sophisticated scientific methods and their application to law enforcement
- Skill in writing about scientific implications for professionals and policymakers
