JOB SUMMARY & MISSION:
Reporting to the Shop Manager, the Bus/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing inspection, maintenance and repair of the Company’s fleet of buses, ensuring the safety, reliability and functionality of the entire fleet. Diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues, including engine and electrical problems, etc., and maintain proper records of such maintenance in accordance with DOT requirements.

Requirements
- Must have own tools
- Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record required
- CDL with P endorsement preferred or willing/able to obtain
- Valid TWIC or willing/able to obtain
- High School diploma/GED
- Training from two-year college or technical/vocational school preferred but not a requirement
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Diesel Mechanic
- Experience working on school buses preferred
- Knowledge of Cummins (6.7, 5.9, & 24 valve), Caterpillar (C7 & 3126) and Navistar (T444E & DT466) Engines preferred
- Knowledge of air and hydraulic braking systems.
- Successfully complete drug screens, safety sensitive background checks, and pre-employment physical
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in loud industrial environments
- Able to push or pull and frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Able to sit periodically and stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders/stairs, reach below knees and above shoulders, kneel and crawl to access work areas
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and ability to reach forward and grasp
- Ability to balance and walk on wet and slick surfaces, metal grates, narrow platforms, and uneven surfaces
- Ability to work in adverse weather environments.
Diesel Bus Mechanic Job Responsibilities:
Maintains safe and mechanical sound diesel bus operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements; computer diagnostics & trouble shooting; brake jobs; wheel seals; correcting vehicle deficiencies; making adjustments and alignments; replacing needed parts; keeping records.
Diesel Bus Mechanic Job Duties:
- Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
- Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades.
- Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brakes, steering, hydraulics; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
- Heavy electrical diagnoses and repair of electrical systems.
- Knowledge of and the ability to troubleshoot vehicle air conditioning systems.
- Rewiring of ignition system, lights and instrument panels.
- Diagnose, adjust and replace brakes on air and hydraulic brake systems.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test equipment such as handheld computers.
- Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
- Complies with federal and state vehicle safety requirements.
- Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
- Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
- Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
- Performs service calls for preventative maintenance, safety issues and breakdowns.
- On call rotation for after hours, holidays and weekend breakdown call outs.
- Ability to work safely and accident free.
