Experience working with students with disabilities preferred; must be a strong team player, with ability to work independently.
Responsible for providing individual and/or small group instructional strategies to students with visual impairments under the supervision of licensed staff in either the general education classroom or those students who attend special education center based programs.
Also responsible for making independent decisions within appropriate parameters; implementing team designed behavior support plans; monitoring and supporting students during special activities, preparing and modifying instructional materials; collecting data for IEP goals and behavior plans, monitoring and providing feedback on student progress, maintaining student confidentiality and adapting to changes in responsibilities and schedules.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
- High School diploma
- At least one year of experience in working with students with special needs is preferred.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
- Criminal background check required for hire.
- CPR and First Aid certifications required within 3 months after hire.
- Nationally recognized crisis training prevention required within 3 months of hire.
- Braille certification preferred. This position requires the applicant work towards Braille (Colorado) state certification within one year of accepting the position.
Essential Duties:
- Prepare on-site materials for student use (e.g., tactile markings) as directed by the teacher for the visually impaired.
- Reinforce use of low vision devices and other adaptive equipment with individual students.
- Communicate on an ongoing basis with students and staff to meet daily needs.
- Assist in integrating students with visual impairments into school activities.
- Receive training from supervisor and attend professional development opportunities to obtain and maintain knowledge of low tech visual tools.
- Explain information presented to visually impaired students in a variety of ways to support instruction and promote understanding.
- Promote developmentally appropriate skills of independence by reinforcing instructional skills being addressed and supporting high expectations.
- Maintain a work area in accordance with job requirements.
- Obtain and maintain knowledge of specific eye conditions of the students and their various needs by discussing conditions with supervisor, reviewing records, and attending inservice training.
- Maintain and ensure the safety of students with visual impairments.
- Support individual students with tasks such as toilet training or other basic personal care needs.
- Communicate with local, state, and national agencies servicing students with visual impairments to keep current with accessing information and materials for the visually impaired.
- Maintain basic keyboarding and computer skills by attending classes and by utilizing the computer on-the-job.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to advance skills.
This position is 30 hours per week at various schools, 6 hours a day
180 days work year calendar
