Position: AOD Counselor / MH Therapist
Direct Report: Supervisor Skip Level: Clinical Director
POSITION GOAL: To provide diagnostic assessments and clinical therapy services to youth, adults and families who are impacted by mental health/AOD diagnoses. To assist youth, adults and families in gaining access to necessary services, to reduce symptoms of AOD and/or Mental Health Diagnosis increase social skills, improve independent living skills and the ability to function at an optimal individual level. These services will be provided in the format of individual, group and / or family therapy. The therapeutic service priorities will include cognitive behavioral therapies, trauma-informed treatment, evidence-based and evidence based informed treatments that are culturally respectful and culturally competent. Services may be provided in the client’s home, community, or agency site based on client need and programming.
WORK HOURS: Flexible hours, with ability to work evenings and weekends to meet agency and client needs. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate flexibility to accommodate for emergency schedule adjustments.
PHYSICAL ASPECTS: Must possess the capability to:
- operate a motor vehicle.
- react promptly to possible adverse situations
- effectively communicate both in oral and written form
- operate phones, computers, and other equipment
- provide First Aid, CPR and Non-Violent Crises Intervention (CPI).
- Ability to visit various locations in the community. (e.g. client’s homes, schools)

- This position may require traveling and transportation of clients. Incumbent will provide own transportation and possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record and proof of agency required insurance.
- Participate in Quality Improvement efforts.
- Have vehicle used to transport clients pass State Highway inspection on yearly basis. Vehicles should contain an Agency supplied First Aid Kit.
- Follow licensure(s), accreditation(s) standards.
- Maintain professional and ethical responsibilities, standards and maintain client rights and safety consistent with agency and licensure policies / standards.
- Possess basic math, computer, and polite courteous telephone skills.
- Ability to provide leadership.
- Service will be delivered consistent with the individual’s scope of practice, education, and training.
- Maintain mandatory training expectations, certifications.
SUPERVISORY ROLE:
- This position does not supervise any positions.
- This position does have supervisory role. (See addendum)
SPECIFIC TASKS:
- Provide clinically appropriate psychosocial/diagnostic assessments.
- Analyzes assessment information to determine advisability of services or if appropriate, referral to another provider.
- Assigns ASAM level of care to determine the level of treatment needed for clients receiving at assessment and at level of care changes for AOD services.
- Develop appropriate treatment plans in collaboration with the client, families, and other treatment providers as needed and when appropriate, which includes strengths, needs abilities and preferences. Provide ongoing review and updates consistent with client need and agency policy and procedures.
- Maintain caseload as assigned by supervisor, including timely updates at admission, reviews and closures.
- Implements termination planning in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
- Conduct individual, group and family format services.
- Maintain licensure(s), accreditation(s) in good standing.
- Learn and practice evidenced-based informed treatment modalities as directed by the agency and / or supervisor.
- Possess a working knowledge of life span development, family dynamics and the ability to deliver culturally competent services.
- Possess a working knowledge of addiction, including MAT services and modalities
- Service will be delivered commensurate with the individual’s scope of practice, education and training
- Minimally maintain a 60% service productivity rate or as set by supervisor.
- Maintain flexibility in schedule to meet client needs.
- Maintain metrics and established standards as outlined in Appendix “A”.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Will provide Mental Health/CPST services as needed, when identified in the assessment and incorporated into the individual treatment plan, which may include:
- Provide on-going assessment of needs
- Assistance in achieving personal independence in managing basic needs as identified by the individual, parent, or guardian.
- Facilitation of development of daily living skills
- Coordination of ISP
- Symptom monitoring
- Coordination and / or assistance in crisis management / stabilization
- Advocacy and outreach
- Care-relevant education / training to the individual and family specific to the individuals assessed needs, abilities, and readiness to learn
- Mental Health interventions that address symptoms, behaviors, thought processes, etc. that assist the individual in eliminating barriers to seek and maintain school, employment success
- Activities to increase the individual’s ability to impact his/her environment.
- Function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, attending collaborative meetings. Provide input, communicate changes in behavior, symptoms, and client circumstances to assist with therapy, treatment planning, care and discharge.
Will provide AOD case management services as needed, when identified in the assessment and incorporated into the individual treatment plan, which may include:
- Case management services means those activities provided to assist and support individuals in gaining access to needed medical, social, educational, and other services essential to meeting basic human needs. Case management services may include interactions with family members, other individuals, or entities.
- Case management services shall include, at a minimum, the following activities: assessment, referral, monitoring and follow-up.
- Examples of case management activities include: coordinating client assessments; treatment planning and crisis intervention services; providing training and facilitating linkages for the use of community resources; monitoring service delivery; obtaining or assisting individuals in obtaining necessary services, for example, financial assistance, housing assistance, food, clothing, medical services, educational services, vocational services, recreational services, etc.; assisting individuals in becoming involved with self-help support groups; assisting individuals in increasing social support networks with family members, friends, and/or organizations; assisting individuals in performing daily living activities; and coordinating criminal justice services.
- Perform treatment planning, assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group counselling, case management and education services as they relate to abuse of or dependency on alcohol and other drugs.
- Refer individual with nonchemical dependency condition to appropriate sources of help.

- Demonstrate understanding of mental illness, psychiatric symptoms and impact on functioning and behavior.
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to therapeutically engage a mentally ill person
- Demonstrate knowledge of concepts of recovery / resiliency
- Demonstrate knowledge of crisis response procedures, de-escalation techniques and understanding how his/her behavior can impact the behavior of individual with mental illness.
- Demonstrate understanding of the community mental health system and community resources. Including understanding of systems of care, such as natural support systems, entitlement and benefits, inter-and intra-agency systems of care, crisis response systems and their purpose and the intent and activities of CPST and or case management.
- Demonstrate understanding of the population served, such as psychiatric symptoms, medication, culture, and age/gender development.
MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS: Preferenceis a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in social work, psychology, or related fields. A Bachelor’s degree with the appropriate licensure and extensive human service experience may be considered. Appropriate state licensing that supports the practice of clinical therapy or AOD services such as a LPC, LPCC, LSW, or LISW or similar license is required or LCDC III or higher or AOD in scope of practice. Must submit to a BCI and FBI background check and not have a criminal record that would exclude you from working in a child-serving environment. Must submit to and pass a drug screen. Must have a valid Driver’s License and maintain insurance coverage, to transport clients, if necessary.
