Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Research Nurse.
In this role, the successful candidate Position within the NYU Acute Respiratory Failure and Sepsis Precision Interventions Research (ASPIRE) Program, an ICU clinical trials group. We perform single- and multi-center clinical trials and clinical-translational cohort studies involving patients with acute respiratory failure and critical illness more broadly. The overarching goal of our research is to develop and validate novel therapeutic strategies to improve outcomes in patients with critical illness, with a particular focus on individually tailored treatment for patients with respiratory failure and sepsis. This position will help manage multiple studies, including prospective clinical trials, observational cohort studies, and retrospective cohort studies for patients in the ICUs at hospitals affiliated with NYU School of Medicine. This employee must be comfortable working with critically ill adult patients on life support, the population of interest for most studies, and interacting with their families.
The Senior Research Nurse works to maintain and ensure comprehensive nursing care to adult research patients in a diverse clinical research setting. The Senior Research Nurse collaborates with Clinical Trials Office leadership to effectively audit all aspects of the research protocol and ensure education and feedback are provided to research teams for quality improvement purposes. Additionally, the Senior Research Nurse will provide clinical leadership and coordination with the philosophy and goals of the institution, Departments of Nursing, and clinical service; development and education of staff in collaboration with the Education Specialist.
Job Responsibilities:

Screen and enroll patients in studies
-
Conduct informed consent discussions and obtain informed consent from candidate study participants directly, or their legally authorized representative (surrogate) where applicable
-
Perform bedside clinical assessments and examinations, including of sedation depth, non-verbal pain assessment, delirium assessment, among other assessments
-
Perform clinical safety monitoring of enrolled patients, including but not limited to respiratory, hemodynamic, and vital signs monitoring and reporting of clinical laboratory tests where applicable
-
Provide oversight and support to clinical staff with study medication administration and administer study medications per protocol, in collaboration with the clinical team

Assess respiratory mechanics and perform study protocol-directed adjustments to the mechanical ventilator, in collaboration with the clinical team, where applicable
-
Obtain and analyze cardiorespiratory and other physiological data

Initiate and adjust other respiratory support, devices, and monitors according to study protocol, in collaboration with the clinical team where applicable

Insert esophageal manometry catheter via oral or nasal route to measure esophageal pressure

Assist with study protocol-directed prone positioning of patients

Perform other bedside procedures as required by study protocol

Obtain and process biological specimens for enrolled study participants, including but not limited to venous and arterial blood samples, nasal or oropharyngeal respiratory swabs, airway samples (sputum, breath condensate, mini-bronchoalveolar lavage), and urine samples as needed for study protocols

Document study measures, procedures, and safety monitoring in the medical record (e.g. Epic or equivalent) and participant study files as applicable

Provide clinical trial in-service, education, and other training to multidisciplinary clinical staff as needed.

Oversee protocol adherence to study procedures and data collection

Maintain rigorous documentation for study records

Support administrative functions of the ASPIRE Program as a trial coordinating center

Maintain detailed understanding of study protocols to field protocol questions from other participating sites around the country for multicenter clinical studies in which the ASPIRE Program serves as the coordinating center
The sr. research nurse will be required to maintain applicable licensure and registration to practice as a nurse or respiratory therapist in New York. The research nurse or respiratory therapist must also complete assigned training and tasks required for work in the hospital setting, the CITI research training program, human subjects research, handling biological specimens, and laboratory training and certifications.
Within the scope of practice, s/he may respond to time-sensitive clinical events, scenarios, or emergencies to facilitate patient well-being and safety.
The research nurse must maintain a vaccination status as required to work in the clinical space and with human biological samples therein derived, which are handled in a Biosafety Level 2-Enhanced (BSL2+) laboratory. Some studies may require work with patients who have influenza, SARS-CoV-2, or other respiratory infections. Requisite personal protective equipment will be provided.
The preferred candidate must have clinical experience in the ICU or in ICU-related research. The ability to work independently within a team, attention to detail, and sound clinical judgement with a commitment to safety are essential. There is opportunity for continued career growth/advancement within our program as it expands in the years ahead.
Work hours will include some evenings and weekends given the dynamic nature of critical illness. The selected candidate will be required to participate in a call system to handle study procedures, questions from the clinical team, and calls from collaborators in multi-site studies that may occur off business hours.
Training on research procedures will be provided as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Minimum Qualifications:NYS RN License with current registration. Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, or equivalent combination of education and experience with plans to earn a baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
Proficiency in using various Microsoft Office applications such as World, Excel, Access, Power Point and Outlook. Familiar with Internet applications.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, and strong analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and work and communicate effectively with both internal and external customers. Ability to work within a team environment as well as independently. Commitment to continuous learning as required by department administration. Ability to make decisions independently. Ability to manage time, multi task and prioritize work. Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems; ability to work well under pressure..

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is highly preferred.
Prior RN experience in a clinical setting preferred. Progressively responsible related experience coordinating clinical/research trials studies and demonstrate clinical competence in clinical trials nursing practice that includes the ability to execute complex research protocols and to assess and make critical decisions affecting research procedures.
Completion of NYU IRB tutorial as a Research Nurse.
Working knowledge of federal regulation, good clinical practice guidelines and support grant guidelines relevant to compliance in the conduct of clinical trials.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
